Journey of Jyani Natural Farm
(1861 - Present)

The roots of Jyani Natural Farm date back to 1861, when the Jyani family first settled in a small village in Punjab, starting a tradition of farming that adhered to sustainable practices passed down through generations. The family cultivated the land with deep respect for nature, relying on traditional, eco-friendly methods. However, in the 1970s, as part of the Green Revolution, the farm shifted to chemical farming—adopting the use of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, and high-yielding varieties of crops. This transition mirrored the broader agricultural shift in India during this period, promising increased production and economic gain.

Despite initial successes, the consequences of chemical farming soon became evident: soil degradation, reduced biodiversity, and a reliance on external inputs. By 2005, after experiencing a devastating crop failure, the Jyani family reevaluated their approach to farming. This led to a pivotal moment in the farm's history—a single-day conversion to 100% organic and natural farming. The family chose to return to their roots by embracing cow-based natural farming, integrating organic fertilizers and natural pest management to restore soil health.

Since the conversion, Jyani Natural Farm has flourished as one of the largest single-unit organic farms in India. The farm’s commitment to biodiversity, sustainability, and ecological balance has made it a model for others to follow. Today, the farm is a living testament to the power of natural farming, and its influence has extended far beyond agriculture, influencing educational initiatives, agri-tourism, and rural entrepreneurship. The farm’s journey from traditional farming to eco-conscious, sustainable agriculture continues to inspire a new generation of farmers.

Diverse Crops & Trees:

At Jyani Natural Farm, biodiversity is a core principle of sustainability. The farm blends native crops, heritage varieties, and agroforestry to create a thriving and balanced ecosystem. A combination of diverse crops, trees, and animals coexist harmoniously, promoting soil health and enhancing ecological balance. The farm avoids monocropping, which can deplete soil nutrients, by practicing intercropping and crop rotation. These techniques help in reducing pest pressure and improving water retention. By focusing on climate-resilient crops, the farm reduces risks from market fluctuations and adverse weather conditions, ensuring long-term sustainability.

Farming Overview

Jyani Natural Farm, spanning 130 acres, has been practicing 100% natural and organic farming since 2005. The farm grows over 70 types of crops, including fruits, vegetables, herbs, grains, and pulses, all cultivated without chemicals. The farm uses crop rotation, agroforestry, and rainwater harvesting to conserve resources and maintain soil fertility. With 17,000 trees planted across the farm, it not only enhances soil health but also supports local biodiversity. By utilizing heirloom seeds, the farm preserves traditional crop varieties while promoting sustainable agricultural practices that respect the environment.

Cow-Based Farming Methodology:

A cornerstone of Jyani Natural Farm is its cow-based natural farming approach. The farm houses Sahiwal and Rathi cows, whose dung is converted into rich compost, significantly improving soil structure and increasing carbon content—with levels exceeding 1% in the soil. The farm also uses cow urine and lassi to make natural pesticides, which help maintain a chemical-free environment. Additionally, Jeevamrit, a traditional organic concoction, is applied to boost soil microbial activity and promote plant health. The farm operates a semi-mechanized dairy system, with waste directed to a biogas unit, which sustainably powers the farm. This integrated system supports soil fertility, enhances plant health, and is in line with the government-recognized gau adharit prakratik krishi (cow-based natural farming), offering a model for sustainable agriculture that is both ecologically sound and economically viable.
